The Chiefs just keep finding ways to win. Whether you’re a fan or not, it’s undeniable that they’re masters of the close game. This time, they pulled off a dramatic 19-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, despite blowing a 13-point lead in the second half. Patrick Mahomes, as usual, was key in making the necessary plays at the most critical moments, even though he didn’t score the game-winning points. Coach Andy Reid opted to let third-string kicker Matthew Wright handle the 31-yard field goal after Mahomes led the team to the red zone. Reid even turned away, not wanting to watch the kick that hit the inside of the left upright before going through — a moment that made the starting kicker, Harrison Butker, smile.
With this win, the Chiefs extended their historic streak of 14 consecutive victories in games decided by one score. Half of their 12 wins this season have been decided on the final play, including dramatic moments against the Ravens, Bengals, Buccaneers, Broncos, and Panthers. Tight end Travis Kelce puts a positive spin on these close calls, saying it’s better to keep winning, finding new ways to do so, and improving with each game.
While the Chiefs’ offense hasn’t been firing on all cylinders, Mahomes continues to shine when it matters most. Despite being sacked 13 times and under constant pressure, he pulled off another game-winning drive, connecting with Kelce on a crucial third-down pass. This win marked the Chiefs’ ninth consecutive AFC West title, but with their unpredictable style, there’s never a dull moment with Kansas City.
