Seven Maoists were killed during a confrontation in Telangana’s Mulugu district on Sunday morning, just a week after two tribal men were killed on suspicion of being police informers. The clash began at around 5:30 a.m., as the Greyhounds spotted the Maoists in the forest. The forces called for their surrender, but the militants refused and opened fire, prompting the security forces to return fire.
Among the deceased insurgents was Bhadru, also known as Kursam Mangu or Papanna, a 35-year-old commander of the CPI (Maoist) Yellandu-Narsampet area committee and a member of the Telangana State Committee.
The other six Maoists killed were identified as Egolapu Mallaiah (43), Mussaki Deval (22), Mussaki Jamuna (23), Jai Singh (25), Kishore (22), and Kamesh (23). All were reportedly under Bhadru’s leadership.
The forces seized a cache of weapons from the Maoists, including AK-47s, G3 rifles, INSAS rifles, and explosives. These have since been confiscated by the police.
Sunday’s encounter marks the first major clash in the region in several years, as the Maoists attempt to reorganize and revive their operations in Mulugu district. Earlier, on November 21, two tribal men—Uika Ramesh and Uika Arjun—were reportedly killed by the Maoists on suspicion of being police informers. Ramesh, who served as the secretary of Peruru Gram Panchayat, and Arjun were found with a note stating that they had been gathering information to pass on to the authorities.
It is still unclear whether the seven Maoists killed in Sunday’s encounter were involved in the killings of Ramesh and Arjun.
