Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu monk and former ISKCON priest, was arrested at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport last Monday in connection with a sedition case. Das, who also served as a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, faced a setback on Tuesday when his bail hearing was postponed due to the absence of a lawyer to represent him.

Known within the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) community as Sri Chinmay Krishna Prabhu, Das is a prominent religious figure in Bangladesh. He has previously held the position of divisional organizing secretary for ISKCON in Chattogram.

Advocate attacked

In a new development related to the case, ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das revealed yesterday that Advocate Ramen Roy, who had defended Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu in a legal case in Bangladesh, was brutally attacked and is now fighting for his life in a hospital. According to Das, Roy’s only “fault” was defending Prabhu in court, and as a result, a group of Islamists raided his home. The attack left Roy critically injured, and he is currently in the ICU.

Das urged people to pray for Advocate Ramen Roy, emphasizing that his only crime was offering legal defense to Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu. The attackers ransacked Roy’s home and left him severely injured. “Please pray for Advocate Ramen Roy. His only ‘fault’ was defending Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu in court. Islamists ransacked his home and brutally attacked him, leaving him in the ICU, fighting for his life. #SaveBangladeshiHindus #FreeChinmoyKrishnaPrabhu,” he posted on X, along with a picture of Roy in the ICU.

Meanwhile, India expressed its “deep regret” on Monday over an incident in which a group of protesters breached the premises of the Bangladesh consulate in Agartala. The protest was in response to the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the breach, which included alleged vandalism, and emphasized that consular properties must not be targeted under any circumstances. The MEA also stated that security at Bangladeshi missions in India is being increased.

In Agartala, thousands of protesters took to the streets to demonstrate against the arrest of Das and the ongoing attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The MEA described the breach at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala as “deeply regrettable.”
